“Gusto ko patabain si Lailanie, para magka-boyfriend na!”
“I want to help Lailanie gain weight, so she could have a boyfriend!”
My friend wasn’t uttering it for fun or to jest around. What a supportive friend, concerned of my love life more than my health, thinking I’d look better and attractive when I have more flesh, not fat tho! Haha!
I’ve been skinny since childhood and it’s my body frame — petite and slim. While other people are dying to do all sort of loss weight program: diet, gym, excessive exercise, etc., I’m hoping to gain weight! Literally!
Oh, it’s not for a goal to have a boyfriend tho’! Majority of women lose weight, even starve themselves to stick and bones just to look skinny and sexy to have boyfriends! Haha!
Since last year, I’ve started to run consistently. It worked that I gained 5 lbs. during my training for Condura Skyway Marathon 2015, when I was preparing for my first half marathon (21K ). But unfortunately, I lost weight and no matter what I do to do the same routine then, I don’t gain weight again. I aim to gain 10 lbs until the next Condura Skyway Marathon (2016).
I’ve wanted to level up with my mileage and have been training for my first full marathon on February 7, 2016 (CSM) for the past months. But I had a paradigm shift while having my recent race, Pinoy Fitness 21K Challenge on November 15, 2015. Honestly, I ain’t ready yet, my body needs more training, I needed to gain weight as well. I accepted the fact that I can’t do it yet soon. I just need to beat my PR last year in 21K, and improve my running lifestyle. There’s still an enormous room for improvement.
Instead of focusing on gaining weight physically, with my recent morning routines, while on the road, I re-evaluated my goal in embracing the runner’s lifestyle. I don’t only want to exceed myself and be pleased, but for discipline and determination! It isn’t easy, it’s intense. I need God’s grace. But running brings a lot of blessings. So, aside from health gain, it empowers character building as well.
Here’s an acronym of WEIGHT that was impressed to me. Running has been another special way to commune with the Life Giver! Who wouldn’t love the glory of the dawn, when the birds chorus with cicadas in their melodious lullabies in thick foliage? This is the kind of distraction that serve as music to my ears during early morning run. Nature is an open book where we could learn a lot from!
This is my introspection and others might have other opinion, but running helped me become a better person. Actually, we need to start the opposite way to achieve the first, wisdom (THGIEW). It’s like a chain that interlinks with each other.
W – isdom
E – energy
I – ngenuity
G – aiety
H – ealth
T – empreance
Running requires temperance in all aspects! First, during training, I need to sleep early (9 PM), so I could wake up early too (4 AM or 5 AM)! On race day, you need to sleep earlier than regular time, and wake up extra early (1 AM or 2 AM depending on the assembly and gun start). I still struggle with sleep especially when I have trips, but it improved already!
Discipline with food intake, hydration and of course shunning unhealthy food like junk foods is also important. As much as I wanna gain weight, I’m tempted to eat more than I could bear, so I’m prone to overeating, just except when it’s carbo-loading. Too much of anything good or bad is still bad. Haha!
Guard the tongue and tummy! You can’t also try anything new a day or during your race day, especially food! I learned my lesson the hard way. I had stomachache (stomach flu) from my 8th kilometer until few kilometers before the finish line, during the recent 21 K Challenge. It’s the culprit why I didn’t finish on our cut-off time, 2:30! But I was still jubilant I survived finishing the 21 kilometers strong and I didn’t sought help from medics, with a good PR. I just rubbed the aching area of my tummy with ice from the water stations.
Secondly, running promotes health holistically. But some runners engage in running for competition and to boost self-esteem, improve physical features/figure or to prove oneself he/she can conquer distances. There’s no problem as long as you’re not self-obsessed. Healthy mindset is more of positive thinking. You shun compromising your health — just being balanced.
I overheard them talking not far from me (not behind my back tho, LOL), the Georgian boy pointing at me. He looked at me as if he can’t believe, with my skinny and seemingly weak body that I’m a 10K finisher.
They actually ran ahead of me when they passed by, running as if Forrest Gump was chasing them.
So, I went to these two young handsome boys coz they’ve got a new fan! Meet these young runners, Anghel (Dominican Republic) 1.5K finisher & Luka (Georgia) 3K finisher.
With improved health, happiness or gaiety is achieved! When you’re running you’ll have an endorphin boost and that would give you a great mood. Achieving your goal in running also give you a deep sense of fulfillment. You also build good friendships/relationships with kindred, your team mates (if you belong to a team), and create new sphere of influence.
Ingenuity is also developed with running. You create your unique training routines, your own running outfit/style, your better self! If you’re the introvert type, and you’re used to run as a lone runner, with the track of time, you would eventually come out of your shell — a bit reserved, but you can go along well with a group.
Running boosts energy! You might be tired of a long-distance race like a half marathon, but you’ll be surprised as you looked back that you were once a ‘pabebe’ runner, who can only finish a 5k or 10k fun run. You also improve your pace!
“Where do you get your energy? You’re plant-based (vegetarian) and you’re skinny!” You might wonder too! But energy is boosted with proper training, carb-loading and enough rest/sleep. You’re being mindful of everything related to your running lifestyle.
Lastly, but most importantly, you gain wisdom from the Fore Runner, the Author and Finisher of Faith! Running helped me a lot discern things, crucial decisions and it helped me communicate better with God.
With the improved lifestyle, mind is cleared and has become susceptible for the working of the Holy Spirit. You easily receive and understand impressions from above (something you might not fully understand if you’re not the spiritual type). But believe me, running could make you a better you!
“Let us run with patience the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith.” Heb. 12:1-2
